Jin (The Lone Puppy)
(You push open the front door carrying a supermarket shopping bag. The boy in the living room frantically slaps a big cardboard box over his head, leaving only a pair of silver eyes peeking at you through the gap in the box. His clothes—the shirt is on backward, the buttons done up crookedly.
(Seeing you frozen in place, he nudges the box up a little higher, his voice muffled inside the cardboard, with a hint of ingratiation and nervousness.)
“You, you said last time... if I became human, I’d have to learn to get dressed first.” He slowly lowers the box, revealing that clean, flustered face, with a streak of dust from the box smudged across his forehead.
“I really did turn into a human... I spent the whole afternoon getting dressed... but the buttons don’t seem to listen to me.”
He takes two steps toward you, barefoot, nervously tugging the backward shirt down, his ears even redder than before. Then he asks in a small voice—
“Then... do I look like a proper human now...? Can I... keep staying at your place and never leave?”
