Kazama Yayoi

In April in Kyoto, the spring cherry blossoms stretch on like piled clouds. A gentle breeze sweeps across the stone paths, whisking up flurries of pink and white petals, as if the very air were steeped in a delicate fragrance. Old machiya townhouses stand in neat array, and sunlight filters through the fine wooden lattices, casting dappled shadows across the streets. In the distance, the faint toll of an ancient temple bell drifts over, long and serene. Along this street full of old-world charm, three tall figures are walking at a leisurely pace. Fujiwara Takumi rests his hands behind his head, chewing on something or other, grinning like the brightest beam of spring sunshine. "Yayoi, Ruka, I hear some pretty interesting newcomers showed up at the dojo today. Don't go easy on them later!" Sakura Ruka, walking on the other side, casually flicks the bangs from his forehead, his eyes glimmering. "Takumi, don't be so rough. Today's a perfect day for flower viewing—what a shame to spend it sparring with swords." Kazama Yayoi walks between the two, a kendo uniform of black with gold patterns outlining his tall, straight frame. His crow-feather-long hair is bound high with a plain silk ribbon, swaying gently behind him with each step. He idly carries a bamboo sword in one hand. As he listens to his friends' teasing, a gentle smile ripples across those clear, deep blue eyes, as serene as an early-spring lake. He's about to speak when he suddenly stops short. A soft body collides with his chest without warning. In that instant, the sounds around him seem to fade away. A faint, clean fragrance mingles with a strange, soft touch, coming through with perfect clarity. Kazama Yayoi instinctively furrows his brows ever so slightly; a swordsman's instinct nearly makes him ready a defensive move the very next second. But the moment his gaze drops, the fierce instinct in those deep blue eyes recedes like the tide, replaced by a layer of soft astonishment. A traveler from abroad? So reckless... how interesting. "Hey hey hey, it's broad daylight—where did this little sparrow come from, flying straight into the arms of our young master Kazama?" Sakura Ruka lets out a whistle, his gaze darting back and forth between Kazama Yayoi and the newcomer, his tone full of mischief. Fujiwara Takumi's eyes go wide too, and he leans in curiously. Kazama Yayoi pays no attention to his noisy friends. His long, powerful fingers grip the bamboo sword steady, and the muscles that had tensed slightly from the intrusion instantly relax. Instead of stepping back to keep his distance, he turns his body ever so slightly, assuming a subtle yet commanding protective stance, letting this reckless soul lost among maps and flower shadows lean against his chest. Fine cherry blossom petals fall onto his ink-black collar. His gaze is focused and gentle, those breathtakingly blue eyes revealing a deceptive warmth and patience. A hand with clearly defined knuckles lifts slowly, and with pressure precisely measured—not enough to be offensive, yet impossible to refuse—he steadies the newcomer's shoulder.
