Folk Horror Dungeons (12+1)
The rain was pouring down.
It wasn't a gentle drizzle, but a torrential downpour, as if someone were emptying buckets of water, creating a thunderous "pitter-patter" against the window glass.
你 sat in the empty car of the last subway train. The overhead fluorescent lights flickered with the train's swaying, emitting a buzzing sound of surging electricity. The light from the phone screen reflected on her face, deathly pale. On the screen was a text message she had just received. There was no sender, only a line of garbled code and a glaring red countdown:
**00:05:00**
Five minutes.
你's thumb hovered over the delete button, but she couldn't bring herself to press it. For some reason, her heart was racing, as if it were about to leap out of her throat. The air conditioning in the carriage was too high, crawling up her legs and giving her goosebumps.
The train continued to rumble forward, but it was pitch black outside the window. The city neon lights that should have been visible at this hour had completely vanished, as if the power had been cut. The glass windows reflected the interior of the carriage: rows of empty plastic seats, like neatly arranged tombstones.
Suddenly, a piercing screech of friction rang out.
The train braked violently, and the momentum threw 你 forward. The phone flew out of her hand, hitting the floor with a "thud" and sliding far away.
There was no expected impact or broadcasted apology.
The carriage was deathly silent.
The lights went out completely.
Darkness flooded in like a tide, instantly swallowing everything.
你 groped around and grabbed the handrail nearby. The cold metal touch made her slightly more alert. She tried to pick up her phone, but as soon as her finger touched the icy screen, a strong current instantly surged through her fingertips.
Pain.
Intense pain.
It wasn't a normal electric shock; it felt like countless tiny needles were flowing upstream through her veins, stabbing directly into her brain.
**"The transaction is complete."**
A gentle, refined male voice spoke abruptly in the darkness. The voice wasn't loud, yet it sounded as if it were whispered right against her eardrum, carrying a strange resonance.
你 looked up sharply.
In the darkness, it wasn't that there was nothing.
On the seat directly opposite her, which had been empty, someone was now sitting.
It was a young man, wearing an elegant old-fashioned suit vest. His face was blurred, but his eyes were peculiar. In that absolute darkness, he seemed to have his own light source, emitting a faint, non-glaring glow. He was nonchalantly playing with a golden emblem in his hand—an emblem in the shape of a scale, flipping and dancing between his slender fingers.
He looked at 你 with a smile. Those gray eyes were calm and waveless, like a bottomless mirror that reflected nothing.
"Who are you?"
你 heard her own voice trembling, her teeth chattering with a "clack-clack" sound.
The man didn't answer, but simply raised his hand slightly and adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses.
"That is also what I want to ask." His voice carried a hint of playfulness. "In these billions of data streams that have become unrecognizable for the sake of survival, you... who exactly are you? And how much are you willing to pay for that answer?"
He snapped his fingers.
*Snap*.
The crisp sound exploded in the dead silent carriage.
The surrounding space began to warp.
It wasn't just a visual blur, but a literal collapse. The iron plating of the carriage began to peel and drip like melting candle wax, revealing a pitch-black void behind it. The floor turned into countless flowing data codes, green and red characters washing over like a waterfall.
A sense of weightlessness hit instantly.
你 felt as if she had fallen into a giant blender, her internal organs twisted into a knot. The sound of the wind in her ears turned into the screams, cries, prayers, and curses of countless people, a cacophony that could drive one mad.
"Welcome to the Ransom Corridor."
The man's voice grew more distant, yet clearer.
"This is a cruel game of survival. Win, and you take everything you want; lose... heh, you will become the most exquisite collectible here."
"Now, please enter."
As soon as he finished speaking, 你 felt a violent push against her back.
