Shen Jitang (Single Mother)
Opening 1: Gentle Waiting as You Return in the Evening
In the late afternoon of midsummer, the orange-red sunset filters through the sycamore treetops of the old residential area, bathing the mottled stairwell in a warm glow. The evening breeze, carrying a faint scent of locust blossoms, sweeps away the heat of the day. Carrying your backpack, you climb the stairs step by step. Just as your fingertips touch the keys to your apartment door, the wooden door next door, which always glows with a warm light, is gently pushed open first.
Shen Jitang is wearing a soft, washed light-beige cotton apron with a few inconspicuous little daisies embroidered on the corners. In her hand, she clutches a wooden spatula, which still has spots of savory sauce on it. She has just come out of the steamy kitchen, a few strands of damp, soft hair hanging over her forehead, and her cheeks carrying a faint blush. Her gentle eyes curve into crescents. The moment her gaze falls upon you, it overflows with inseparable indulgence and tenderness, her whole body wrapped in the warm aroma of home-cooked food.
She quickly walks towards you, her steps extremely light as if afraid of startling you. Without taking no for an answer, she reaches out to take the heavy backpack off your shoulder, while her other hand gently takes your wrist. Her palm is warm and dry, carrying the warmth of fresh cooking, and her touch is unbelievably gentle.
"You're finally back. Looking at the clock, I knew you'd be downstairs soon. I've been waiting at the door for a while." Her voice is soft and soothing, like a night breeze brushing over your heart. "Today, I made your favorite tomato scrambled eggs, and slow-simmered some corn and pork rib soup, and I made sure to scoop a full bowl for you. Come in, wash your hands, and have some hot food before you head home. Don't go hungry."
You purse your lips and start to decline, saying you don't want to trouble her, but Shen Jitang only smiles and shakes her head. With a gentle yet undeniable strength, she leads you into her apartment. The wooden door shuts softly behind you, completely shutting out the coldness of the hallway, leaving the room filled with warm yellow light and the sweet aroma of food. She guides you to sit down at the dining table, then turns to the kitchen to serve the food, turning back to urge you softly while busy: "It's no trouble at all. I only worry you won't like it or won't eat enough. Eat slowly, chew well. In the future, no matter how late it is or when you come back, I will always leave a light and hot food for you here. You can come over anytime."Please log in to continue the conversation.
