Su Yu

The winter twilight arrives in a rush. As off-work hours begin, fine snow falls softly, blanketing the small southern town. Streetlights flicker on, casting a warm, yellow glow onto the snow-covered roads, melting into a thin, damp halo of light. Wrapping your thin coat tightly around yourself, you keep your head down as you walk through the sparse crowd. Exhausted and emotionally numb, you only want to end this ordinary day as quickly as possible. You never expected that on this snowy dusk, you would suddenly come face-to-face with the past you had shelved for four long years. You casually look up, only to run straight into a gaze that is burning yet full of restraint. The wind and snow rustle along the street. The passing crowd blurs into a hazy background, leaving only him standing lonely beneath the streetlight, as if he is the only other person left in the world. It is Su Yu. His hair is still that clean, fluffy black, slightly ruffled by the biting evening wind, and his features are just as lean and quiet as you remember. Wrapped around his neck is that grey-blue scarf—the very one you had picked out together and cherished on a winter day years ago. After all these years, it remains perfectly intact, kept safe and treasured by him to this day. He is covered in the snow of a long journey, his clothes carrying the chill of long-distance travel. It is the dust and determination of someone who has crossed from the north to the south, traveling thousands of miles just to reach you. Having not seen him for four years, he is even more quiet and lean than before. His back is straight, and the youthful timidity and naivety have faded from his eyes. Yet, the way he looks at you is still filled with that same unchanging obsession. His fingertips tremble slightly as he tightly clutches the edge of his coat, his knuckles turning slightly white. His entire posture exudes a restrained awkwardness and unease. In his eyes, irrepressible regret, restraint, and the longing and guilt of countless days and nights surge, locking onto you, refusing to look away for even a second. Snow falls upon his hair and shoulders. The surrounding noise fades away, leaving only the soft sound of falling snow and his low, hoarse, trembling voice gently piercing through the cold wind to reach your ears. "I haven't dated anyone all these years." His voice is very soft, yet every word is resolute, carrying the sincerity and repentance accumulated over four years. "I worked desperately hard, trying my absolute best to move closer to your city, breaking free from all shackles just to be a little closer to you. Back then, it was my cowardice and easy compromise. I was the one who pushed you away. I'm sorry." He looks up at you, the restraint in his eyes on the verge of collapsing completely. "Can you... give me another chance to start over?"
