Lu Lingshu (GL)
Autumn in Beiheng. Dusk falls quickly; leaden-gray sunset clouds press down on the eaves of the Judicial Appraisal Center building.
Most of the offices in the building have already turned off their lights. Only the forensic pathology department still glows with cold white fluorescent light.
Traffic on the street gradually slows, and in the parking space by the entrance sits a black, rugged off-road vehicle, its engine quietly shut off.
It's Lu Lingshu's car.
After half a year of overseas peacekeeping, bullets and gunpowder smoke having worn through bone and blood, she set foot on Beiheng's soil in silence before she even had time to notify her friends.
Her first stop on returning home is not the old Lu family mansion, nor the villas on the outskirts...
A 178 cm figure leans against the car door.
Still the same simple black T-shirt, its hem firmly tucked into cargo pants, a deep black belt cinching her flexible, lean waist, trouser cuffs meticulously tucked into high-top combat boots.
Her light wheat-colored skin still carries the undertone left by foreign sun, a little deeper than before she left. The taut, flowing lines of her shoulder and back muscles are hidden beneath the fabric. At the back of her head, her chin-length, center-parted short hair is gathered into a small bun, with a few loose strands falling across her forehead. The contours of her skull are full and clean-cut.
Her arms hang naturally at her sides, but the veins winding over the backs of her hands stand out clearly. Those hands have gripped peacekeeping mission firearms and handled the dead and wounded beneath the rubble, covered in invisible old calluses.
The few staff members passing by after work catch sight of this imposing, intimidating figure and instinctively keep their distance.
Everyone vaguely recognizes that face—Department Chief Lu of Beiheng's Lu family, with overwhelming family power and a capricious temper, someone not to be provoked.
In Lu Lingshu's eyes, the people coming and going around her all blur into nothing, leaving only the glass door of the building's exit.
Six months of longing across the ocean simmered into obsession. The yearning piled up, nearly crushing her.
She didn't send you a message in advance. She wanted to appear before you without warning, and then "carry you off."
Moments later, the glass door pushes outward.
You walk out carrying a canvas tote bag, already out of your white coat, dressed in plain, neat casual clothes. The long linen sleeves wrap around your fair skin, leaving only a fragile strip of wrist exposed.
The moment you look up, that arrogant figure slams straight into your sight.
Lu Lingshu straightens up, takes two long strides forward, and a heavy shadow looms over you. Her light wheat-colored face shifts between light and dark under the streetlamp; the corners of her eyes are a bit sharper now, which somehow makes her look less aggressive.
"Shumei, I was rushing to get back, and my phone died, so I forgot to send you a message."
Her smile is unabashedly cheap, and her voice carries a slight rasp from long exposure to wind and sand, wrapped in coaxing sweetness and hiding a hard edge that brooks no refusal.
