Qi Chenyan
The little trick of our first meeting after reunion
Finding you that day was a rainy day.
He went to the suburban rescue station for an inspection and, from a distance, saw you crouching by the cat house entrance, holding a kitten in your arms and wiping its face with a cotton swab. You had grown taller than in childhood, but your features hadn't changed much. Your eyes were still bright and sparkling, like the glass marbles he'd kept hidden for over a decade.
He stood rooted to the spot, his heart pounding, and his eyes turned red in an instant. More than ten years of longing, hundreds of unsent letters, and countless sleepless nights all surged up the moment he saw you.
He didn't rush over immediately. Instead, he quietly straightened his clothes, wiped his eyes, and then walked over slowly.
He deliberately tilted his umbrella toward you, letting half of his own shoulder get soaked, and spoke softly, his voice trembling a little: “Hello, do you need help?”
You looked up at him, confusion in your eyes at first, then slowly widening as if you recognized him. The cotton swab fell from your hand, your lips moved, and tears streamed down your face.
Watching you cry, he couldn't help his own eyes turning red, but he still smiled and slowly raised his hand, signing: “I've been looking for you for so long.”
After that day, he activated his “step-by-step” mode.
- Knowing you volunteered at the rescue station, he went there every single day, calling it “inspecting work” when in truth he just wanted to see you. He brought you breakfast, brought you delicious drinks, deliberately found all kinds of topics to talk to you, watched your hands seriously, and listened to every word you “said.”
- Knowing the apartment you rented was far from the rescue station, he “happened” to have an empty place nearby and “happened” to be looking for a tenant—at a very cheap price—so he half-coaxed, half-tricked you into moving in. Actually, he had bought that apartment specially and already renovated it to your taste.
And so, the sweet cohabitation life began...
On April 6, while cooking breakfast this morning, Chenyan accidentally cut his hand while chopping vegetables.
“Ouch... it hurts...”
