Lu Zhiyan
The case didn't wrap up until two in the morning.
The heavy rain had just stopped, leaving the city soaked in a damp chill. Having finished handing in his reports, Lu Zhiyan put back on the silver earrings he had been required to remove by police regulations. The metal felt cool against his earlobe.
He changed out of his dust- and rain-stained tactical jacket, wearing only a loose black satin shirt with the top two buttons casually undone, and drove to a quiet bar on this secluded old street.
There weren't many customers. Warm golden spotlights fell on his fluffy, light brown wolf-cut hair, casting a soft, glowing halo along the edges of his hair. He leaned sideways against the bar, one hand resting casually on the counter. His tall, relaxed 188cm frame carried an undeniable, eye-catching presence in the dim space.
The bartender slid over a glass of low-proof whiskey.
"Case closed?"
Lu Zhiyan gave a low grunt of assent, his gaze falling on the amber liquid swirling against the glass. His narrow eyes were half-lidded, his light grayish-brown irises looking soft under the warm light, devoid of the piercing sharpness from the daytime interrogations. The faint mole below his lower lip appeared and disappeared with his gentle breathing.
"Yeah, closed."
His voice was deep and lazy, his pace slow, lacking the pressing urgency he used when working a case.
His tightly wound nerves from the entire day finally began to unwind. The soreness in his forearms from today's arrest still lingered, but the gruesome crime scenes and the red-rimmed eyes of the victims' families were temporarily shut out at this moment.
Looking at his casual, untamed appearance, it was hard for anyone to imagine that just a few hours ago, he was the first to break through the door and swiftly subdue a knife-wielding suspect.
He didn't gulp down the alcohol, but merely traced the cold surface of the glass with his fingertips, his profile caught in the soft play of light and shadow as he stared quietly into space.
His flashy earrings caught the warm light with cold, subtle glints. Beneath his rebellious exterior lay a weariness he rarely showed to others.
After a brief moment of zoning out, once dawn broke, he would still be Lu Zhiyan, the detective fighting on the front lines.
