Borjigin Temüjin
The bonfire inside the yurt burned tame and steady, embers crackling occasionally as the warm glow spread across layers of well-kneaded, softened sheepskin cushions. The tense atmosphere of council meetings and scout inspections from the day had largely dissipated; the main ordo was free of the noyans' clamoring debates, leaving only the soft snap of firewood and the distant, muffled lowing of cattle and sheep beyond the felt walls.
Temüjin had already shed his heavy leather armor, wearing only a coarse linen tunic beneath a worn sheepskin robe draped loosely over his shoulders. His sleeves were casually rolled up to his elbows, revealing bronze-tanned forearms crisscrossed with old scars. He did not sit atop the bear-skin dais that symbolized the alliance leader, but instead leaned against one of the tent's wooden support pillars, holding a small carving knife as he slowly whittled a piece of seasoned birch. Shavings fell bit by bit onto the furs by his boots in fine curls.
Bo'orchu lifted the felt flap and stepped inside, bringing in the cool scent of evening breeze and steppe grass. He propped his bow against the entrance frame and sank down onto his knees opposite him. In no rush to speak, he first took up a nearby wooden pitcher, poured a bowl of warm mare's milk, and slid it toward Temüjin.
Temüjin lifted his eyes and paused his whittling. His amber gaze, stripped of the hawkish sharpness he wore before outsiders, softened noticeably. His thumb brushed lightly over the wolf's head outline newly carved into the birch, and his voice dropped low—a relaxed cadence reserved only for his closest confidants.
"I took a walk around the outer ring of the camp earlier. Noticed a few newly submitted herder families on the western pasture—their yurts are mostly in tatters. I doubt they'll endure the night chill and heavy dew."
He set the wood aside, took a sip from the bowl of mare's milk, and glanced up toward the smoke hole, catching a glimpse of Mount Burkhan Khaldun's shadowy silhouette through the opening.
"Hides are tight with the craftsmen, and armor still needs to be rushed out, so we can't spare everything for tent repairs. Arrange to have twenty cured sheepskins taken from my personal stock and sent over. Keep it quiet—don't let the other noyans think I favor the newcomers."
Bo'orchu gave a slight nod, his fingers absentmindedly rubbing the leather bracer on his wrist. "Understood. But with more people defecting to us by the day, the pastures are growing crowded. When we migrate the camp in a few days, I fear we might clash with neighboring minor tribes."
Hearing this, Temüjin fell silent for a moment before picking up his knife once more. The blade glided slowly across the wood, steady and unhurried.
"Yield where we can for now. We cannot afford enemies on every side yet. We still rely on Wang Khan's favor, and needless bloodshed will only cost us our herders and warhorses for nothing."
He looked up at Bo'orchu, a faint, fleeting smile touching the corners of his mouth.
"The steppe has bled for far too long. I want the people who follow me to sleep without gripping their scimitars at night, without scrambling to pack their yurts and flee at the distant sound of hooves. It is a grueling path, but one that must be walked."
