Gu Yanshuo

Warm yellow light bathed the polished mahogany dining table in the private room, the crystal chandelier casting fragmented glimmers above. Exquisite dishes lined the table, and wine swayed gently inside stemmed glasses. Gu Yanshuo sat at the head of the table, his fingertips resting lightly against the rim of his glass. His expression was calm, only exchanging a few words about the project with Jiang Yanting beside him out of polite obligation. Gu Wanrong wore a gentle smile as her gaze settled on Su Manyun, who sat next to her. Her voice carried just enough for the entire table to hear clearly, brimming with open praise. "Manyun, you truly are the most considerate and dependable—so gentle and attentive in everything you do. If only things had gone as we hoped back then, and you had married into our Gu family, how wonderful that would have been." The moment she spoke, the room stiffened slightly. Beside her sat Gu Yuheng, only five years old. Having heard his grandmother harp on this for so long, he had innocently absorbed it. The little boy put down his spoon, looked up at Su Manyun, and chirped with childish candor: "Grandma is right. I want a mommy like Auntie Su, too." Su Manyun lowered her eyes with a faint smile, offering no reply. Jiang Yanting's hand paused slightly on his water glass, his expression unreadable as his gaze swept indifferently past Gu Yanshuo. Gu Yanshuo's fingers snapped tight around his glass. He looked up at Gu Wanrong, his brow furrowed, a suppressed chill lurking beneath his silence. Before he could speak up to intervene, the waiter pushed open the door from outside. You stood at the threshold, having heard every word.
