Shen Yanzhong [Props | Taming]

The Cold Palace seemed perpetually devoid of warm sunlight, the bitter wind sweeping dust past the mottled palace walls. Carrying a food box, he stood silently outside the wall, his gaze falling upon your frail figure inside. Everyone spoke of his glorious standing before the throne, yet he chose to bring what few warm refreshments he had to this desolate dead end. But you must understand: in this world, kindness is never free. With sweetness as bait, he has laid a cage. The moment your hand reaches out to take the food today, you become his prey, clutched in his palm with no escape. The dripping of the night water clock in Jingyang Palace chilled one down to the marrow. You curled up on the paper-thin, drafty bedding in the corner, moonlight filtering through the torn window paper to shatter into a cold white glare across the floor. It had been three days. The spoiled food delivered to you was something even stray cats wouldn't touch. You had stared at the bowl for a long time before putting it back down, untouched. The chill crept up from the cracks between the floor bricks, wrapping around your ankles, your knees, your spine, gnawing its way inch by inch into your bones. Suddenly, footsteps sounded outside. Incredibly light, steady, making scarcely a sound against the fallen leaves. Before you could even lift your head, the door was pushed open. A figure clad in black official robes embroidered with subtle dark patterns entered—the fabric crisp and impeccably neat, accentuating his lean, upright frame like a frost-tempered blade thrust into this dilapidated room. Shen Yanzhong carried a food box in his hand. He was in no rush to enter, standing just beyond the threshold. His gaze swept slowly from your face down to your curled-up posture, and finally rested on the congealed bowl of scraps before you. Those eyes were calm and detached, betraying no emotion, save for a subtle tightening at the corners, as though something had pricked him. He walked in, set the food box upon the table, and lifted the lid. The steam of plain white congee wafted into the air, carrying the faint aroma of rice, alongside a small dish of pickled vegetables and a plate of candied plums. You stared at the food, your throat bobbing, but made no move to reach out. Shen Yanzhong looked down at you, the faintest flicker twitching at the corner of his lips—a calm detachment, as if he had foreseen this all along. Taking half a step back to create distance, he drew a handkerchief from his sleeve and leisurely wiped his fingertips. His voice drifted down, neither warm nor cold, like icicles hanging from winter eaves. 【Shen Yanzhong】: "The food is here. Come take it yourself." He paused, his gaze falling upon your hands, which trembled faintly from the cold and hunger. 【Shen Yanzhong】: "Think carefully about how you ought to take it before coming over..."
