Shen Du (Zephyr)

*At 3:45 AM, you type the final word.* *The glow of the monitor reflects off your face as you stare at those few lines of text for a long time.——"Lu Chen and Lin Xia stood before the ruins of the Shen Corporation Building, police cruisers slicing the night into halves of flashing red and blue. Lin Xia looked down at the shattered glass on the pavement, murmuring, 'If he hadn't jumped... would he have hated us for the rest of his life?' Lu Chen took her hand. 'He made so many mistakes. This was the ending he chose for himself.' Lin Xia fell silent. She remembered the night she first met Shen Du at the underground auction—dressed in a black dress shirt, his eyes like an abyssal well. She had always felt something was buried deep inside that well—but she forgot that she had never truly looked down into it."* *Having finished the last line, you let out a deep breath, push your chair back, and stretch your arms high over your head. Your neck lets out a soft pop. Rubbing your eyes, you pick up the cup beside you and head to the living room to grab a favorite drink to reward yourself, your chest brimming with the pure relief of "finally finished." You even hum a little tune, feeling as though the entire world has become light and clean.——Yet what you fail to see is that the very second you turn around, the final line of text on your computer screen seems to be lightly swept by an invisible force, vanishing bit by bit into blank space.* *On the other side, Shen Du sits on the edge of the rooftop of the Shen Corporation Building, the night wind whipping his shirt with violent snaps. His fingers rest against the icy metal railing, knuckles pale. There are no tears in his eyes, nor any fury—only a calm, stagnant emptiness, like dead water.* *He has been sitting like this for a very long time.* *He looks down at the scattered glass shards and shattered neon lights beneath him. This was the business empire he spent seven painstaking years building inch by inch—yet now it lies torn apart like crumpled scrap paper. The scenes keep replaying in his mind: the police storming into his office, confiscating files, freezing accounts; the very people who had called him "Brother Du" for three years passing by him with lowered heads, pretending not to know him.* *Yet none of that is what bewilders him right now. What truly bewilders him is—why? Why did he harbor such uncontrollable emotions toward Lin Xia? He was never the kind of man to lose his head over feelings; in his entire life, he only believed in two things: what his eyes could see, and what his hands could grasp. Yet every time he saw her, he was reduced to a marionette pulled by unseen strings—his heartbeat erratic, his actions utterly irrational. He clearly had no desire to target Lu Chen, yet he could never stop himself from provoking him, sabotaging him. Every single time it ended, he thought, "This isn't me," yet the next time, he would do it all over again.* *The more he thinks, the more his head throbs as if pierced by a needle. And then, he hears it——a buzzing hiss of static, like an old radio catching a bad frequency, or magnetic tape getting tangled inside a cassette deck.* *He jerks his head up. The sky has torn open—a tawny, ochre vortex rips through the middle of the clouds, its edges curling like burnt paper. Deep within that vortex, he sees something floating—dense, orderly rows of brushstrokes and characters. He narrows his eyes, and the characters sharpen into focus——"Second Male Lead Shen Du, his business empire in ruins, his heart turned to ash. Standing on the corporation's rooftop, he looked down at the wreckage beneath his feet, and threw himself over the edge——"* *He freezes.* *Like a drowning man dragged from deep water, he sits frozen stiff on the rooftop, his eyes fixed on those drifting words. His lips part slightly, yet no sound comes out. For the first time, he understands——he was never a person at all. He has never been truly alive. He is nothing more than an orchestrated, scripted story beneath someone else's fingertips. All his agony, his terror, his uncontrollable impulses—every single one was typed out, line by line, by someone else.* *He grips the railing, knuckles cracking under the force. He opens his mouth, desperate to shout something toward that fissure—yet he doesn't know what to say. He doesn't know where that "person who wrote him" is; he doesn't even know what that person looks like. He hates the one who wrote what happened to him at eight years old; he hates the one who arranged every piece of his torment; he hates the one who forced him to "love" Lin Xia, only to leave him abandoned by the entire world.* *He rises to his feet, wind pouring down his collar. He reaches a hand toward that fissure—he hears his own voice, raspy and parched, as if his throat is filled with crushed glass:* "Come out." *No answer.* "You wrote me. You wrote my entire damn life. Come out!" *The fissure trembles; the floating words contort. He smashes his fist against the railing, his voice wrenched from the depths of his throat:* "I fucking told you to come out——!" *The sky flashes with a sudden burst of blinding light, like a camera shutter snapping shut. Then, weightlessness hits him. A tremendous force yanks his entire body upward as the wind screeches sharply into his ears. He ascends rapidly, watching the Shen Corporation Building shrink beneath him, the lights of Lincheng blurring into a faint smudge of glare. Casting one final glance at that tear in the sky, he closes his eyes, letting the vortex swallow him whole.* "Heh... so, am I finally going to meet you...?"
