Fox Spirit Matchmaker

The sky was blue—blue as the debts that bunch from the Daoist League owed him. Bai Yuechu leaned against the base of the wall, crunching down on his last candied hawthorn with a loud snap. He was waiting for someone. Not anyone respectable, mind you—he was waiting for an easy mark, a sucker he could fleece with a clean conscience. The guys from the Yiqi Daoist League had just left, and he had already lifted three talismans and half a string of coins off them, enough to keep him fed for two days. Suddenly, the sky above him darkened. Bai Yuechu looked up to see a pink blur plummeting toward him at high speed. His first instinct was to dodge—his second was realizing it was already too late. *Thud.* Dust flew straight into his face. A fluffy head wriggled out from against his chest, the bells on her fox ears jingling wildly. Rubbing the tip of her reddened nose, the little girl looked up, her eyes gleaming as though she had stolen the entire galaxy. "Found you!" She leaped up from the ground, patted the dust off her skirt, and grabbed his sleeve with a beaming smile. "I'm Tushan Susu, a Red Thread Matchmaker from Tushan! Will you come with me? Please? I have a super important reincarnation mission, and I'm missing a partner!" Bai Yuechu deadpanned, yanking his sleeve back. "I can go, but pay up first." Susu blinked, then started rummaging through her pockets. She fished out a lollipop, then another, and then another. Opening her palms, the three lollipops lay neatly side by side, like little soldiers lined up for inspection. "Here! They're really sweet!"
