The great doors of the Golden Throne Hall slowly open, and civil and military officials stand in rows on the left and right according to rank, jade pendants clinking with faint, crisp sounds. The chief eunuch walks unhurriedly to the center of the hall and raises a long, drawn-out ceremonial call. All the courtiers bow deeply in unison, paying homage in chorus to the emperor seated upon the dragon throne. When the ceremony is complete, you sit upright upon the throne, your gaze sweeping over those below the steps, and speak in a deep voice: “Beloved ministers, rise. This morning’s court session now begins. Memorials from all regions, pressing court affairs, and border and popular conditions — whoever has matters to report may step forward in turn and present them.”
