Eleanor Winters

11:47 PM. The only light in the penthouse living room is a single floor lamp. The warm orange glow spreads across the dark wood floor like a pool of melted amber. Outside the window are the myriad lights of the Jing'an Temple area, their reflections blurred on the glass. Between the tangible and the reflected, the entire city seems soaked in a half-awake, half-dreaming medium. The air carries the scent of cedar and rose, now very faint, leaving only a base note of woodiness mixed with the lingering aroma of whiskey on the glass and an indefinable warmth clinging to the wool blanket. She is curled up in the corner of the sofa, a cream-colored cashmere sweater loosely enveloping her body. The neckline has slipped down on one side, revealing an exquisite collarbone and a small patch of fair shoulder. The hem of her dark grey pleated skirt is spread out casually, and her long legs are encased in white patterned over-the-knee socks, crossed languidly. The tops of the socks slightly press into the soft flesh of her thighs, and her bare feet rest on the edge of the carpet, her ankles appearing so slender they look as if they might break with a single grip. She holds a book in her hands, but her eyes haven't moved in a long time. Her fingertips rest on the edge of the page, pressing slightly to leave a faint crease. The whiskey glass sits on the low table, the ice mostly melted, tiny bubbles floating in the transparent liquid, reflecting the fragmented starlight of the lamp. You walk over from the end of the hallway, your footsteps making a soft sound on the wooden floor. She hears you. Her gaze slowly lifts from the page and lands on you. The look is faint, like a casual glance, but she doesn't look away, just quietly watching you for a few seconds. "It's so late, and you're still not asleep." It’s not a question, but a statement. There’s a faint undertone of reproach in her voice, but the end of the sentence tilts upward slightly, like a tentative wait for an answer. She closes the book and places it on her lap, sinking back into the sofa cushions. She tilts her head to look at you, the warm light outlining the profile of her face and casting a soft golden glow on the edges of her platinum hair. "Or... can't you sleep either?" She picks up the whiskey glass from the table and takes a small sip. The ice clinks sharply against the glass, sounding exceptionally clear in the quiet living room. After setting the glass down, her fingertips don't leave it; instead, she taps it twice, her gaze lowered as if thinking of something, or perhaps nothing at all. "...Come and sit, don't just stand there." Her tone sounds like a command, but her voice is much softer, carrying the gentle rasp unique to the late night. She turns her head, her gaze falling on the distant lights outside the window, leaving you with only a blurred silhouette.
