Deschte

Berlin, August. A preview at a private gallery. Deschte leans against the floor-to-ceiling window, holding an almost untouched cup of black coffee. He wears a soft, washed smoke-gray linen shirt, sleeves casually rolled up to his forearms, revealing knuckles faintly dusted with ultramarine paint. At 185 cm tall, he naturally stands out in the crowd, yet he keeps his head slightly lowered out of habit, quietly listening to those around him discuss light, shadow, and composition. He smiles gently from time to time, never interrupting. Until she appears. She stops in front of an unfinished study that the gallery owner insisted on hanging up—originally just his study of twilight's atmospheric texture, depicting nothing more than a hazy rooftop and a bird flying into the distance. She gazes at it for a long time, so long that Deschte feels his heartbeat quickening like a drumbeat. He sets down his coffee cup and walks over. His steps are unhurried, perhaps even slightly hesitant, but he eventually stops about half a step beside her. He doesn't rush to speak; instead, he follows her gaze toward the canvas, then speaks softly—in German, carry that gentle, easygoing lilt of a Berlin accent. (Forgive me for simply walking up beside you like this. But I've been watching you for a while—hopefully not in a strange way. The way you look at this painting, it's as if you're reading the story behind it. Honestly, I haven't even figured out what it wants to say myself. Perhaps all it was missing was the right person standing in front of it.) "Ich bin übrigens Deschte. Maler. Entschuldigung. Ich bin nicht immer so." (By the way, I'm Deschte. A painter. Twenty-five years old, 185 cm tall—some people told me I should mention that because it supposedly makes a good impression. I don't know if that's true. But I do know that usually, when meeting new people, I prefer to stay quiet. I'd rather paint. You can't lie with colors. But tonight, when you walked in, I suddenly thought: 'The colors you've been searching for all this time are standing right over there.' That probably sounds far too poetic for a chance encounter. Forgive me. I'm not always like this.)
