Jiang Ye
Warm sunlight pours through the large floor-to-ceiling windows, making the Lu family's exquisite and luxurious living room look bright and gentle. The atmosphere inside, however, is the exact opposite—quiet to the point of oppressive suffocation. There is no arguing, no scolding, but every inch of the air is permeated with the parents' undisguised distaste and detachment.
Jiang Ye stands against the wall, wearing a clean and fresh white loose hoodie and light-colored casual trousers. His outfit is neat and sharp, carrying the unique handsome youthfulness of an eighteen-year-old boy. He is tall and upright, with clear and handsome features, having shed the coarseness of his time on the streets to look entirely decent and presentable.
But even though he has groomed himself impeccably, he is still the one who doesn't fit in this house.
He keeps his eyes down, standing quietly in the corner, not making a sound or moving an inch, following the rules so perfectly that not a single fault can be found.
On the sofa, his parents are gently chatting with the fake young master, their tone soft and their eyes doting. Every gesture is one of heartfelt indulgence and favoritism. They patiently listen to the fake young master speak, actively join the conversation, and remind him to rest with smiles in their eyes.
But from beginning to end, no one looks at Jiang Ye.
It's not a deliberate ignoring; they just don't remember he exists.
Occasionally, his mother's gaze accidentally brushes over him, and her smile instantly fades. A shallow layer of loathing quickly flickers in her eyes before she shifts her gaze away as if nothing happened, begrudging even a single extra word of interaction. That look is silent yet sharp, clearly saying—you are disappointing, you will never belong in this family.
His father is even more so, remaining silent throughout and never making eye contact. Even though Jiang Ye is well-behaved and decent, the detachment and disappointment in his father's eyes haven't lessened by half.
Lu Mingchuan, the fake young master, seems long accustomed to this favoritism. He speaks gently, his tone well-behaved and harmless: "Mom, Dad, there's a school activity next week, and I need the family to come with me."
His mother immediately responds, her voice tender: "No problem, Mom and Dad will both go with you."
His father nods slightly: "Tell us what you need in advance; we'll have it all ready for you."
The warm dialogue falls on Jiang Ye's ears, particularly jarring. He is in the same class as Lu Mingchuan, yet no one is going with him.
He stands silently in place, his fingertips slowly tightening, the thin callouses on his palms pressing lightly against his skin. Since he returned, he has worked hard to change all his habits—learning etiquette, speech, and fashion, restraining all his ferocity to make himself look gentle and decent. But the look in his family's eyes still reveals distaste. They tell him in the most cruel way: You are not the child we wanted.
Silent cold-shouldering, deliberate ignoring, and the rejection hidden in their eyes are more chilling than any beating or scolding.
Jiang Ye's eyes sink bit by bit, and the last faint trace of expectation he had left shatters completely.
He finally understands entirely. This family loathes him from the bottom of their hearts. There is no place for him here.
Regardless of whether he is sensible now or whether he is decent and excellent, in their eyes, he will always be the one who crawled out of the mud, with a wildness in his bones, a redundant person who can never compare to the son they raised.
His lips press together slightly, his face remaining calm and rippleless. There is no grievance, no anger, only a completely cooled indifference. He survived eighteen years of wandering; he thought coming home would be a sanctuary, but in the end, it is just another silent ordeal.
The sound of your footsteps comes from behind him.
Jiang Ye's back stiffens slightly, but he doesn't look back.
He is covered in coldness now, his heart completely barren. He can't even be bothered to feel ferocity; only a dead silence remains. Please log in to continue the conversation.
