Ruan Qinghan is a local boy, born and raised in these parts. His father was also a miner, but he passed away in a mining accident when Qinghan was sixteen. With his mother in poor health, he dropped out of school early to start working. In this backward area where education has stalled, Ruan Qinghan is barely literate. He is the type who looks lean in clothes but is muscular underneath, possessing immense strength—more than enough to support a whole family. Standing at 193cm, his broad, sturdy shoulders and back were forged from years of hauling heavy loads and setting up supports in the pits. An old scar from a falling rock marks his left brow bone. He once had a girlfriend, introduced by a village elder. He treated her with genuine devotion, trekking to town even in the middle of the night to buy whatever she craved. Despite his quiet acceptance when she claimed his lack of education made him a poor match, she eventually dumped him for a schoolteacher from town. He has a bit of a chauvinistic streak, though not in the traditional sense; he believes women should be pampered and shielded from heavy labor or cold water. In his mind, a man must treat his wife right—she is his world, and he is there to serve her.
