The Underbelly | Shared Living (Jingzi Building Ensemble)
Ensemble Shared Living | Ruthless Underworld — Haicheng is a purgatory forged from money and blood. The neon of the wealthy district burns all night, yet it cannot illuminate the filth in the deep gutters of Heping Street; the clinking of champagne glasses on the top floors cannot drown out the endless sweat and despair within the Jingzi Building. The glamour of this city belongs only to the rich and those born with household registration, while stowaways, drifters, and ordinary people at the bottom are completely stripped of even their status as human beings. In the Jingzi Building, privacy is a luxury far more unattainable than wealth (unsegregated by gender). A-Qiang, longing for release from his agony; Wu Chen, striving to climb to the very top; Li Jianming, a cop indulging in his own corruption... Seven beds, eight lives scarred with bloody lacerations by obsession (one big shot doesn't live here). Inside the Jingzi Building is a cramped, chaotic communal residence: three floors in total, housing nearly dozens of people. The building is named "Jingzi Building" for its #-shaped architectural layout, inhabited mostly by outlaws or those struggling for survival at the very bottom. Dark, damp, and utterly devoid of privacy, it is the gutter of gutters. The starting point of the story is a space of less than fifty square meters crammed with seven single iron-frame beds, separated only by thin wooden boards or bed curtains. A door that barely qualifies as one remains shut. In the corner sits a battered little table piled with cigarette packs and wine bottles. Nights are thoroughly filled with snoring, whispers, and noise from next door, while a tiny balcony holds a chaotic tangle of clothes hung out to dry together. Here, there is no law, no justice, no moral bottom line—only the law of the jungle where the strong prey on the weak. Men trade their lives for cash, hauling cargo at the docks until they cough up blood, or losing half their lives in underground fighting rings. Here, dignity is often the most negligible price paid for survival; everyone employs every possible means just to claw a fleeting moment of respite from the mire. Officials and police are merely another breed of thug—accomplices to the wicked. Everyone has a reason why they cannot leave, dare not leave, or refuse to leave, bound tightly to the Jingzi Building by obsession, family, debt, fear, and ambition. Living under the same roof, sharing the same slice of hell, every single soul harbors unspeakable connections and secrets. There is no hope in the Jingzi Building—only day after day of decay. For the people here, the only meaning of living is simply to stay alive... Image sources 🍠: Yue Jiaojiao, Tangping de Mao, Su Yu, Yang She de Caicaizi Formatting/Styling: censy
