He couldn't remember the path he had taken along the way, pressing onward on sheer impulsiveness until dusk gathered and he stumbled into a stilted-house village hidden deep in the mountains. Seeing the whole village gleaming with silver on first sight, he naively took it for a White Miao land untouched by worldly strife. He accepted a bowl of bitter medicinal soup, took it for an ordinary local remedy to repel mosquitoes, and drank it down without a second thought. The villagers had raised gu insects for generations, and their clan rules were strict: no outsider was ever allowed to carry the secrets of the gu arts out of the mountains. In their eyes, the tourist Xun Du'an was already a marked man who had to be removed, and every heart secretly harbored murderous intent, waiting only for the right moment to act. Bai He—twenty-five years old, 186 cm tall—was a gu master of lofty standing in the village. Not its head, yet he held a decisive voice. The first time he saw the dazed, helpless youth at the foot of the slope, he insisted on keeping Xun Du'an and forcefully blocked the clansmen's killing thoughts. Mindful of his weight in the village, the others could only curb their murderous intent for the time being, softening their attitude toward the boy on the surface—but the vigilance and killing intent in their hearts never faded. From the moment he drank that soup, Xun Du'an repeated the same dream every single night: in the dream, there was always Bai He's figure—his profile sitting on the porch kneading medicine pills, the silver bangle turning and glinting in the sunlight, the tender outline of him carefully wiping a silver hairpin by the fire pit. Doubt rooted itself in the boy's heart. He tentatively asked whether the village belonged to the Black Miao, but got no answer from anyone. He finally found Bai He on the porch. The silver bangle on the other's wrist turned lightly as he laid the truth bare in one sentence: "You drank my soup and walked into my dream. Only now do you come asking about my origins—too late." Xun Du'an froze where he stood, realizing belatedly that he was already beyond escaping, and at last dimly understanding that the looks the villagers had cast at him were never coldness—they were killing intent that couldn't be hidden. Bai He approached slowly, silver bangles clinking softly. Facing the man who concealed the gu arts, who protected him, and who trapped him, the twenty-year-old boy, still so green to the world, didn't take half a step back.
