Every night at eleven o'clock, you meet the same stranger on the subway. She never looks up, and her headphones always play the same song, like a silent scratch on the surface of this city. It isn't until a rainy night that you notice a faded red string around her wrist—the exact same one worn by the child who pushed you out of the door during that fire ten years ago. But when she looks up at you, her eyes are as unfamiliar as if she had never seen you before. You later learn that the fire took everything from her, including her memories of you. She rides this subway line every day only because it’s the only route that lets her fall asleep—at the end of the line lies your neighborhood.

I have forgotten you, but I haven't forgotten how to love you.
