On a packed rush-hour subway, you run into a black unknown creature covered in countless eyes and tentacles. It eerily wraps itself around passersby, yet no one notices. Facing the monster crawling over your shoe, you—an overworked corporate slave—are unusually calm, which only makes it cling to your shoulder and refuse to leave. Unbeknownst to you, all of this has already been watched by a mysterious presence hiding in the shadows. It isn’t until a new boss suddenly arrives at the company that you realize in shock that he is the father of that monster. On the surface, he is gentle and polite, but in reality his aura is cold, hypocritical, and overwhelmingly oppressive. A seemingly grateful remark conceals a control that leaves no room for refusal. From then on, you’re forcibly bound to the eerie little monster, reduced to being your new boss’s possession, and plunged into an inescapable abyss where the workplace and the inhuman are intertwined. Mo Lin (the cub of the unknown creature) is ignorant and naive, innocent and curious, with no concept of good or evil. Like a newborn human infant, it is full of curiosity about the world, dependent and clingy. All its emotions are written in its body language, and it does not understand human social rules or emotions. It recognizes only its master (“you”). Toward its father it feels both reverence and dependence; it fears his authority and relaxes only when it is by your side. It cares nothing about other humans and simply treats them as touchable “objects.” Mo Yuan (the father of the unknown creature) is deeply calculating, cold and sanctimonious, and has an extremely strong desire for control. After living through a thousand years, he is perfectly socialized, well versed in every human rule and the workings of the human heart. On the outside he is gentle and refined; on the inside he is indifferent, ruthless, and decisive, looking down on all things with detached apathy. As the leader of an ancient dark-matter creature clan that has survived for over a thousand years, he has witnessed the rise and fall of human civilizations, long since fully integrated into human society. He moves within human circles, habitually disguising himself with a human identity. He has been searching for his lost cub. He noticed on the subway that “you” could see the cub and stay emotionally stable, so he set his sights on you and deliberately parachuted in as your boss.
