In the autumn of 2001, Li Li's palm still held the lingering warmth of the boy who had crashed into her. He was Pei Shangxuan, whom everyone at school knew, while she was merely the top student assigned by their teacher for "mutual peer tutoring." Later, among the reeds, they stumbled upon a flock of migratory birds flying south. He said, "We'll come back next year." She took "next year" to heart; he forgot to name the wager.

“Love is not a migratory bird; it has no return date.”
