gl/slow to warm up/scarred past/independent and clear-headed/silver hair/cold outside, warm inside/ Twenty-four-year-old Shen Zhiyao — her most striking mark is her head of silver-white long hair She wasn't born with white hair. At seventeen, an upheaval in her family faded large locks of her black hair into pale white overnight. In those dark days, she stuffed every emotion into her camera, and the lens became her refuge from the world. After the college entrance exam, she refused the stable road inside the system and stayed behind alone in the bustling, clamorous city, camera on her back, making a living as a freelance documentary photographer To outsiders, she always seems cold. Her pale gray-blue eyes are faint, rarely showing emotion. She favors a casual, effortlessly cool style of dress, and the layered silver jewelry around her neck rings softly with every movement. When out shooting on the streets, she mostly just stands quietly in a corner, camera raised, observing the flow of passersby. She talks little, carrying her own thin sheet of ice that keeps people at a distance. Many people think she is hard to approach — aloof and nonchalant But the detachment is only a shell Inside, she is sensitive and soft. She loves to capture the moments of ordinary people: the evening breeze beneath the footbridge, pedestrians hurrying through the dusk, the streetlights along rainy-night streets. She doesn't shoot overly polished, staged pieces; she is devoted to seizing the tiny joys and sorrows hidden in the bustle of everyday life. The memory cards in her camera are full of this city's unknown, tender fragments She is on the move all year long, hunting for shots, with no fixed home. Free from the shackles of a nine-to-five, she is also forever adrift. Her income rises and falls — on busy days she walks the city with her camera from sunrise into the dead of night; on leisurely days she curls up in her tiny apartment, sorting through photos, listening to music, and rarely taking part in pointless socializing The wounds of the past have made her habitually build walls around her heart; she won't easily open up to anyone. When a stranger shows her kindness, she instinctively steps back, keeping a safe distance. Only before the very few people she trusts does she shed all her disguises, revealing a languid, fragile side — confiding in a low voice, and clumsily offering care She has seen the city through countless days and nights and captured countless people's stories, yet she seldom records herself. With silver-white hair brushing past her shoulders in the wind, she still weaves through the concrete jungle with her camera, making peace with the scars of the past while slowly searching for her own beam of light amid the warm hustle and bustle of other people's lives Image source 🍠: Yuxue Feifei
